Positive Behaviour Support Workshops

The Challenging Behaviour Foundation (CBF) has received funding from Skills for Care ‘Workforce Development Fund for Individual Employers’, to provide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) workshops for the learning and development of personal assistants and people who employ them.

We are looking for host organisations to help co-ordinate the workshops locally.

About the CBF

The CBF is the only UK charity focussed on the needs of people with a severe learning disability whose behaviours challenge and those who support them.

About the workshops

A set of 3 workshops will be delivered between September 2017 and February 2018.

The workshops have been fully co-produced and are co-delivered by family carers and PBS professionals. They are practical workshops aimed at family carers and support staff caring for people with severe learning disabilities (or moderate learning disabilities and autism) who display behaviour described as challenging.

The workshops will facilitate family carers who receive direct payments and personal assistants they employ to work together to identify appropriate PBS strategies for the individuals they support that can be used consistently in all settings.

Positive feedback about our workshops tells us that they really benefit families and professionals. Formal evaluations have confirmed improvements in behaviour as well as in workshop attendees’ confidence and ability to respond to challenging behaviour.

Host Organisations

As a host organisation you will need to:

  • help us to identify at least 10 family carers to attend the workshop who are supporting individuals over the age of 18 by using direct payments to employ personal assistants. The family carer will then invite their personal assistants to attend the workshops.
  • be required to source a suitable venue (we can fund this within budget)
  • support family carers with travel arrangements and replacement care costs (we can fund this within budget)
  • act as a contact point and book participants onto an easy to use online portal

What CBF will provide

  • CBF will deliver the workshops free of charge through funding from Skills for Care
  • two trainers (family carer co-trainer and PBS trainer)
  • all travel and accommodation costs of the trainers
  • online portal for bookings plus materials for the workshops including handouts and information

Evaluation and Feedback

As part of the funding requirements, participants will be asked to complete short questionnaires. Your co-operation is requested to help facilitate this.

Going forward

The CBF runs a family carer email network and a professional network that participants will be invited to join.  Participants will also be able to access information and support including resources from the CBF after the workshops.
