EHRC launch legal challenge against Secretary of State for Health and Social Care
A legal challenge is launched against the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care over the repeated failure to move people with learning disabilities and autism into appropriate accommodation.
Today the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) launched a legal challenge against the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care over the repeated failure to move people with learning disabilities and autism into appropriate accommodation.
We welcome this legal challenge – we know that people’s human rights are being abused, and this has to stop. The Transforming Care programme, announced in 2012 after the abuse of people with learning disabilities at Winterbourne View Hospital was exposed, was meant to address the issues the EHRC have highlighted. There have since been further scandals uncovered, and many reviews, reports and challenges about the failure to deliver the change required. It is people with learning disabilities and /or autism and their families who are living with the harmful consequences of this failure and this cannot be allowed to continue.
