Latest Transforming Care Data shows care not transformed for thousands of children, young people and adults with a learning disability and/or autism

With just a few days to go to the Transforming Care programme deadline of the end of March, the latest NHSE figures (for February) show that there are still 2,295 people with learning disabilities and/or autism in inpatient units.  The number of under 18 year old’s has increased since last month - at the end of February the NHSE data show that 250 children in inpatient units.

The target set 3 years ago by NHSE was to discharge 35% - 50% of inpatients by March 2019. This data shows that even the lower end of this target (35%) has not been met and far too many people are in inpatient units when they could be living successfully in their local communities. This failure has an immense human cost and is indefensible. The Government needs to show commitment and leadership by establishing a cross Government Ministerial group now to get a grip on the situation, learn from the failures, and deliver the transformation that is needed to ensure that people with learning disabilities and/ or autism get the right support in the right place at the right time.
