Behaviour Support Teams

Behaviour support teams are set up to support individuals with learning disabilities and their families. They may differ in terms of the services they offer; some may offer assessments for diagnosis or provide different strategies to support individuals with their behaviour. These teams can be made up of a variety of professionals including psychologists, speech and language therapists or medical professionals.

  • Eligibility: Individual will have a primary diagnosis of learning disability or autism spectrum condition.

South East

West Sussex County Council

Community Learning Disability Team - Challenging Behaviour (CLDT-CB):

  • Age: 18 years + but also works with young people in transition
  • Location: Based in Horsham but work with service-users living across West Sussex. Also works with people funded by West Sussex but living out of county, for example in reviewing placements.
  • Eligibility: Must come under funding responsibility of West Sussex County Council. Must have a diagnosis of Learning Disability and engage in significantly impactful challenging behaviour
  • Referral system: Via Community Learning Disability Teams

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

Community teams for people who have a learning disability (CTPLD):

  • Age: 18 years +
  • Location: Cover the whole of Surrey. There are individual CTPLD teams based in NW, SW, Mid and East Surrey
  • Eligibility: IQ of 70 or below, linked with impairment in social functioning. Also need to be registered with a GP in their local area
  • Referral system: Open referral system – including self-referral, referral from friends, families or GP

Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust

Positive Behaviour, Autism, Learning Disability and Mental Health Service

  • Age: 0-19 years
  • Location: Country-wide Hertfordshire
  • Eligibility: Diagnosis of Autism or Global Learning Disability
  • Referral system: referral from a professional working with the family

Central and North-West London NHS Foundation Trust

Behavioural Support Service:

  • Age: 18 years +
  • Location: Brent/Harrow borough in London
  • Eligibility: Must have a diagnosed learning disability with challenging behaviour
  • Referral system: Referrals can be made from any source directly to the local Community Health Team or via the respective local authorities

Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust

Camden Learning Disabilities Service:

  • Age: 16 years +
  • Location: Camden borough
  • Eligibility: Must have a diagnosed learning disability
  • Referral system: Open-referral system – including self-referral, referral from friends, families or GP

South West

Westbourne Unit, Plymouth Community Healthcare

Community Learning Disabilities Team:

  • Age: Adults, beginning with those in transition (around 17/18 years old)
  • Location: Plymouth only
  • Eligibility: No criteria for disability – dependent on referrals
  • Referral system: A referral unit is in place to allocate peple to appropriate team. Referrals to this unit based on an open referral system – including self-referral, referrals from friends, families or GP

Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust

Intensive Support Team:

  • Age: 18+ years
  • Location: Cornwall (county-wide)
  • Eligibility: Must have a learning disability. (However, if no diagnosed learning disability, may be able to arrange assessments for diagnosis). Helps individuals with challenging behaviour
  • Referral system: Anybody can refer – but referrals must go through Community Learning Disability Teams first

Gloucestershire NHS/County Counsil

Learning Disability Intensive Support Service

  • Age: All age groups (children and adults)
  • Location: Across Gloucestershire county
  • Eligibility: Need to be a Gloucestershire resident, registered with a Gloucestershire GP. Also, will need to have a diagnosis of a learning disability and complex health needs
  • Referral system: Referrals need to be made through local Community Learning Disability Teams

Black Country Partnership Foundation Trust, Walsall

Behaviour Support Team

  • Age: 18 years +
  • Location: Walsall
  • Eligibility: Will have a learning disability and display behaviour that others consider challenging
  • Referral system: Referrals can be made by carers, family members, or support services e.g. psychiatrists or community learning disability services

Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust

Worcestershire Behavioural Team

  • Age: Adults only
  • Location: Worcestershire
  • Eligibility: Will have a learning disability and display challenging behaviour
  • Referral system: An open referral system

East Midlands

Derby Hospital, NHS Trust

Complex Behaviour Service

  • Age: Up to 18 years (but don’t normally see very young children)
  • Location: Derby
  • Eligibility: Diagnosed learning disability and behaviour that is difficult to manage. May also have an additional diagnosis of ASD or ADHD
  • Referral system: Referrals need to be made by a professional e.g. paediatrician, child psychologist, clinical psychologist or specialist nurse

Leicestershire Partnership Trust

Learning Disability Outreach Team

  • Age: 18 years +
  • Location: Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
  • Eligibility: Individual with a diagnosed learning disability and severe challenging behaviour that poses an ongoing risk to self/others.
  • Referral system: Open referral – can be made by anyone

Yorkshire & Humber

North Lincolnshire Council

Intensive Support Team for Complex/Behavioural Needs / Learning Disability Team:

  • Age: Primarily adults, however their work is focused on a ‘Prevention’ model (starting early). If referred from psychologists, they may work with 14 years +
  • Location: Whole of North Lincolnshire
  • Eligibility: Focuses on assessment and intervention with individuals with a learning disability (not learning ‘difficulties’)
  • Referral system: Referral from families is possible, however referral normally comes from GPs or other professionals

Leeds Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

Severe Challenging Behaviour Service:

  • Age: 18 +
  • Location: Leeds
  • Eligibility: Individuals must have a learning disability, and their behaviour may have caused harm to others. This team doesn’t provide practical treatments/interventions, it merely advises
  • Referral system: Referrals can be made by families, carers or other professionals, however they must all go through the Community Learning Disability Service first

Children’s Learning Disability Service

  • Age: 0-18 years
  • Location: Stockton and Hartlepool area
  • Eligibility: Individual will have a learning disability of any type or severity
  • Referral system: Open referral system

Specialist Health Team

  • Age: 18 years +
  • Location: Durham City and Darlington borough
  • Eligibility: Individual will have a moderate to severe learning disability. They may also display severe challenging with risks to physical safety
  • Referral system: Don’t operate on an open referral system. Clients would need to be referred via the local authority or learning disability nurses or a psychiatrist

Halton Borough Council

Positive Behaviour Support Service

  • Age: All age groups
  • Location: Based in Halton borough, however also support neighbouring authorities Knowsley, Cheshire East and Sefton
  • Eligibility: For core services, individual will have a moderate to severe learning disability (and/or Autism) as well as display some challenging behaviour
  • Referral system: No self-referral. Referral needs to be made by a professional eg. a social worker

Teams in Northern Ireland

NHS Trust (South East Northern Ireland)

Behaviour Support Service

  • Age: From the age a learning disability is diagnosed
  • Location: Covers 3 centres in Downpatrick, Lisburn and Bangor
  • Eligibility: Individual will display behaviour described as severely challenging and have a learning disability (IQ below 70, significant impairment in adaptive behaviours evidenced before 18th birthday). They also need to be a resident of the South Eastern Trust area
  • Referral system: Initial referral from Consultant Psychiatrist, GP or member of Community Learning Disability Team. Re-referral can be self-referral.

Teams in Scotland

VTSS (Visiting Teaching and Support Service)

Additional Support Learning Service

  • Age: Mainly children from pre-school through to secondary school age
  • Location: Edinburgh
  • Eligibility: Serves children in mainstream schools with a learning disability arising from autism or ADHD. They also help children with social and/or emotional difficulties.
  • Referral system: Open referral is available, so families can contact VTSS directly. However, referrals are mainly directed through the Single Access Point where professionals can assess the needs of any cases referred to them.

Richmod Fellowship Scotland Service

Positive Behaviour Support Team

  • Age: All age groups
  • Location: Scotland
  • Eligibility: Primarily provide support to people that laready receive services from 'The Richmond Fellowship Scotland'. Individual doesn't necessarily need to have a learning disability
  • Referral system: Referral via social worker
